A Superb Example of the Great Fishing Grounds
[Amsterdam, 1695]

Grand Banks/ Newfoundland.  KEULEN, Johannes van  [Amsterdam, 1695Pas-kaart Van de Grand Banq By Terra Neuff...  20 x 23 inches.  On double-ply paper as issued; fine hand color; a faint stain, else a fine, bright example.

Very fine example of a beautiful chart of the famed fishing grounds that lured European fishermen since the 15th century.  It boasts one of van Keulen's more ambitious cartouches, in which cherubs fish with nets.  Oriented with north to the right, the engraving shows the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland at the top.

The Van Keulen firm was a leading supplier of charts, instruments, and maritime related books of uncommon longevity.  It remained a family-controlled business until 1823 and then continued to operate under another owner until 1885.
