Rare, separately published map of California, richly illustrated with views of California agricultural scenes, including an early image of the harvesting of wine grapes ("A California Vintage").  Other vignettes, showing lemons, cherry and orange orchards, a rose tree, and other scenes, display the bounty of California’s fine growing conditions.  Together the images provide a vista of extreme abundance.

The map contains a great variety of detail: counties, towns, roads, railroad, mountains, rivers, lakes, mining information, township surveys, Indian reservations, etc.  There is early detail for Virginia City and Carson City. 

Maps of this type functioned as both up-to-date geographic sources as well as promotional instruments for the state’s allure.
