Richly Detailed Pictorial Map of Oxford University
[London? 1948]

Oxford University.  LEE, Kerry/ PICTORIAL MAPS, LTD.  [London?, 1948] Oxford. 18 x 22 ¾ inches.  Original color print on high-grade, heavy paper.  Pinholes in corners of margins, else excellent condition.

A particularly attractive example of this vibrantly colored and detailed, pictorial map/ view of the University of Oxford.  Founded c. 1096, Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and is thus a mash-up of various architectural styles that are displayed here in considerable detail.   The dates of most of the structures depicted are provided.   Surrounding the view are border panels dedicated to each of Oxford’s colleges with their coats-of-arms and most notable alumni and faculty noted.

This uncommonly ambitious travel poster was the work of the British artist, illustrator and poster designer, Kerry Lee (1902-1988), who specialized in pictorial maps. Published by Pictorial Maps Ltd. and printed by Chromoworks, this and other such works were commissioned by the short-lived Travel Association of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (1947 – 1950).
