MERCATOR, G./ JANSSON, J./ HONDIUS, H.
The Rare English-Text Edition of an Early Map of the Balkans
[Amsterdam, 1636]

Serbia/ North Macedonia/ Bulgaria/ / Romania/ Bosnia/ Kosovo/ Albania/ Constantinople. MERCATOR, G. / HONDIUS, H./ JANSSON, J.  [Amsterdam: 1636] 13 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches. Walachia, Servia, Bulgaria, Romania. Fine hand color; centerfold reinforced, else excellent condition.

A detailed and attractive map of the lands surrounding the Lower Danube in the rare English- text issue, which was the first appearance of the second state of this map. The map’s cartouche, surmounted by an Ottoman crescent and various instruments of war, suggests the political context of the map: the territories depicted here fell within the bounds of the Ottoman Empire at peak of its power in Europe.
The verso text describes the histories, important towns and resources of Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. It discusses Constantinople in particular detail, then goes on to describe the structure of the Turkish government, particularly as it effected the Christian denizens of the region.

Price: $495.00
