Panoramic Views along the Line of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. The Scenic Line Of The World.

8 x 51 inches, Folding color-lithographed brochure. 3 ¾ x 8 inches (folded), 8 x 51 inches (unfolded). Slight soiling, few reinforced splits, parts of letters of caption lost to cropping, else excellent.

A superbly realized promotional brochure, one of the finest we've seen, issued by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, featuring a sequence of nine beautiful views of Colorado's mountainous natural wonders, many with trains cutting through the landscape. Fittingly the railroad's original motto was "Through the Rockies, not around them." The brochure also provides several descriptions of notable places and of the sundry advantages of Colorado as well as one of Salt Lake City. All are delivered with prose that attempts to rise to the majesty of the subject.
The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad "was the epitome of mountain railroading," (Wikipedia) and was the highest mainline railroad in the United States. Incorporated in 1870, its primary function was to connect Denver and Salt Lake City. However, it had several branch lines in Colorado and New Mexico, running as far south as Santa Fe. It had spur lines in Utah to the gold regions including one to Alta.
While there were numerous brochures issued by the railroad, most we've seen on the market have been later than this one, which seems to be quite scarce.
