NIPPON CHI.
Japanese History/ Humor. February 5, 1906 Issue of the Japanese Magazine Nippon Chi (The Land of Japan). 10 x 7 inches; wood-engraved; 67 pp. not including cover; very slight edge wear & toning, four intentional puncture holes for binding?, excellent. A very well-preserved special issue of the Japanese magazine, Nippon Chi, commemorating Japan’s victory over Russia at Tsushima in May of 1905. The Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), during which this battle was a pivotal episode, was won by the Japanese and is considered the first in modern history in which an Asian nation overcame a European one. Nippon Chi was a satiric humor magazine modelled after Punch, and several of its illustrations appear to skewer the pretensions of the wealthy.
