First Edition of Speed's Herefordshire
[London, 1611/ 1614]

Herefordshire described with the True Plot of the city Hereford.

15 X 20 inches, Fine hand color; bottom of centerfold reinforced, else fine condition.

First edition and a fine example of this picturesque map evoking the rugged, forested terrain of the western English county with its many castles. At upper right is a plan of the town of Hereford with its great cathedral at the center, where is housed the legendary, medieval world map.  Below the plan is a vignette of the Battle of Mortimer's Cross, a major battle in the War of the Roses fought on February 2, 1461, on the morning of which a parhelion occurred, i.e. the appearance three rising suns, as depicted here.  At lower left and right, eye-weary map and globe makers work at their trade, one or both of whom may be self portraits of Speed.
