Finely Detailed, Early View of Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden.  MERIAN, M.  [Frankfurt am Main, 1638`Stockholm. 7 ½  x 13 inches.  Marginal mend well away from printed image, else excellent condition.         

A superb bird’s-eye view, published just after Stockholm had become the official capital of the Swedish Empire. The view is oriented to the south, displaying the city’s northern fortifications and gates. The royal castle appears prominently to the left of center. In the foreground, Stockholm’s suburbs of wooden houses stand in contrast to the city proper, whose architecture was characterized by brick construction. Above the view, the imperial arms of Sweden are displayed.

Matthieiu Merian, the elder (1593-c.1650), was part cartographer, part topographer, and part social scientist, who recorded for posterity the development of European cities during the 17th century.  He married the daughter of the great engraver/ publisher, Theodore De Bry.
