Superb Early Views of Nuremberg, Ulm and Salzburg
[Cologne, 1572]

Nuremberg/ Ulm/ Salzburg/ Lindau.  BRAUN & HOGENBERG  [Cologne, 1572]   Nurnberga/ Ulma/ Urbis Salisbugen/ Lindola. 13 x 18 3/8 inches.  Fine hand color; fine condition.
A fine example of the first issue of this beautifully engraved group of views of four prominent Bavarian towns of Nuremberg, Ulm, Salzburg, and Lindau. The first three were important early centers of learning and printing, while Lindau was a Free Imperial City on an island in Lake Constance in southern Bavaria near the borders with Austria and Switzerland.

The engraving appeared in the Civitatis Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas of city plans and views.  This remarkable work provided hundreds of realistic and detailed views of mainly European towns and cities.  Various artists contributed on-the-spot drawings that employed various perspectives.  However, like the Ortelius atlas, whose title this work echoes, the Civitatis set all these depictions within a uniform framework.
